Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People purchasing these medications should be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
